How to make the most of your self storage unit

Inventory
Always make an inventory of all items stored.

Use the Height
Think about height. Stack all that you can, as high as you possibly can.

Use all the Space
You are paying for all the space, so you will save if you fill all the space.

Disassemble
Disassemble all that you can, so that small items can fill valuable spaces.

Don’t Store Food
Give all food stuffs away. They deteriorate quickly and can cause bug infestations.

Erect Shelving
If you have shelving, erect it, as it is great for storing all your boxed goods.

Fridges and Freezers
Defrost, dry and clean before storing. Leave door slightly open and place deodoriser inside. They can be used to store other goods inside.

Washing Machines
Drain water from hoses and tape them to back of machine.

Furniture, Chairs and Beds
Remove legs (if possible) and tape to underside. Stand on end and cover with drop sheets. Mattresses should be wrapped in plastic.

Clothing, Linen etc
Pack in secure cartons or plastic with napthylene, mothballs or similar product for protection.

Dishes and Glassware
Individually wrapped and packed in strong cartons, marked fragile.

Mirrors, Windows, Screens, Paintings etc
Wrap in bubble-wrap or flat-pack cartons. Store them standing on their edge in a upright position, not laying flat.

Metal Items
Wrapping silver in non-acid tissue paper or plastic bags can help limit tarnishing. Wipe chrome or cast iron with a little oil to help retard rust.

Stereos, Televisions, Videos and Computers
If possible use original cartons, alternatively wrap items individually in bubble-wrap and pack in strong cartons. Always secure turntables and tones arms of record players. Remember to “back up” the computer hard disk before storing and keep back up in alternative location.

Battery Operated Appliances and Toys
Remove the batteries to avoid damage from leaking batteries.

Lawn Mowers and other Machinery
Drain fuels and oil from all machinery. This reduces the risk of leakage, spillageand damage to other goods.

Boxes
List contents of boxes on all sides, number and seal with tape.

Tools
Spades, Forks, Rakes, Hoes, etc can all be stored together in empty rubbishbin. Wipe with a little oil to prevent rust.

Dangerous Goods
No dangerous or illegal substances such as fuel, chemicals etc are to be stored.

Rodents
Even though the management take precautions against mice, these can come in with other tenants goods. It is therefore recommended that you place rodent control baits inside your storage unit.

Use a Professional Mover
Use a professional mover. They do the job properly usually in half the time and you will avoid most problems. They have the equipment and the experience. A professional mover knows how to maximise space usage and can save you a lot of money.
